NHL Preview For San Jose @ NY Islanders:

San Jose's current losing streak has carried over to the road, where the club has been dominating this year. The Sharks will aim to halt their skid at a place where they haven't lost in over 12 years when they visit the NY Islanders this afternoon @ Nassau Coliseum.

San Jose has lost 3 in a row, including a setback to the NY Rangers on Sunday in the opener of a season-long 8-game road trip. The Sharks will be visiting the Nassau Coliseum for the 1st time since a 2-2 tie against the Islanders on October 20,2001.

The Sharks are 4-1 with a tie in their last 6 overall games versus the Islanders & unbeaten (4 wins,2 ties) in their last 6 as the visiting team against NY,which hasn't defeated San Jose at home since January 17,1996.

The Sharks fell to 17-6-3 on the road this season after Sunday's 3-1 loss to the Rangers.Jonathan Cheechoo had the lone tally for the Sharks to give him 9 goals over his last 12 games.

Evgeni Nabokov stopped 30-of-32 shots in the loss.San Jose's Joe Thornton posted his 500th career assist and is tied for the NHL lead with 51 helpers.Thornton has 215 assists in 198 career games with the Sharks.

San Jose captain Patrick Marleau has missed each of the Sharks' last 3 losses due to a groin injury.

The Sharks have dipped to 9 points behind 1st-place Dallas in the Pacific Division and is 5th in the Western Conference,3 points back of Anaheim & 1 ahead of Nashville.

The Islanders are coming off a dominant defensive effort over the Atlanta Thrashers on Saturday.Rick DiPietro came just 77 sec shy of a shutout and the netminder needed to make only 9 saves in a 4-1 victory.

NY let rip a season-high 49 shots while holding Atlanta to an Islanders' franchise-low 10 shots on goal. The 39-shot differential was also a new club record for NY.

Ruslan Fedotenko scored his 4th goal in 3 games,Sean Bergenheim had a goal and an assist & Miroslav Satan & Marc-Andre Bergeron also lit the lamp for the Isles.

NY,12th in the Eastern Conference and 3 points out of a playoff spot, plays the 2nd of back-to-back home games today and is 15-12-3 as the host this season.

NHL Preview For Detroit @ Colorado:

The Detroit Red Wings will try to halt their longest losing streak in over 17 years when they visit the Colorado Avalanche & the Pepsi Center tonight.

Detroit,which leads the NHL with 87 points this year,has dropped 6 in a row for the 1st time since a 7-game skid from January 14-30,1991.The Red Wings also endured a 6-game winless streak(4 losses,2 ties)from January 25-February 8,2003.

After a lopsided 5-1 setback versus Columbus on Friday, the Red Wings suffered a close 1-0 loss to Dallas Sunday.Detroit fired 28 shots at the Stars' Marty Turco, but couldn't light the lamp.

With Dominik Hasek out with a hip flexor & All-Star Chris Osgood 0-4-0 with a 5.73 goals-against average over his last 4 starts, the Red Wings went with Jimmy Howard in net on Sunday.Making his 5th career start & 1st since December 13,2005,Howard was solid with 30 saves in the tough-luck loss.

The Red Wings still lead the Central Division by 18 points over Nashville and hold an 8-point edge over Dallas for the top spot in the West.Detroit has lost 3 in a row on the road, with Sunday's loss coming in the opener of a 5-game trip.

Detroit is 20-8-3 as the visiting team this season.

This is the 4th and final meeting between Detroit & Colorado this season, with the Red Wings winning all 3 of the previous matchups. However,Osgood didn't start any of those victories.Instead,it was Hasek, who yielded just 2 goals in those 3 wins.

Osgood is 9-7-1 with 3 ties and a 2.68 GAA in 21 career starts against Colorado.

Detroit has won 4 of 5 & 11 of its last 13 against Colorado,& has also won 6 of its last 7 trips to Denver.

The Avalanche are also struggling,as they have lost 3 in row & 4 of 6 overall. That includes a 2-1 setback in Chicago on Sunday.Jaroslav Hlinka accounted for the lone Colorado goal.

Jose Theodore, who made 25 saves in defeat yesterday, lost his lone start vs Detroit this year despite allowing only 1 goal.Theodore is 1-4-0 with a 2.21 GAA in 5 career starts against the Red Wings.

Colorado has fallen to 4th in the Northwest Division,7 points behind front-running Minnesota. The club is also 9th in the Western Conference,a point behind Vancouver and Calgary.

The Avs have lost 5 of their last 6 at home but are still a solid 18-10-2 at the Pepsi Center this season.Following tonight's game,Colorado heads to Anaheim to begin a 5-game road trip on Wednesday.

NHL Preview For Phoenix @ Los Angeles:

The Phoenix Coyotes shoot for their 6th win against the LA Kings this season when the 2 clubs wrap a home-&-home set tonight @ the Staples Center.

The Coyotes posted a 4-3 home victory over the Kings on Saturday & have outscored LA,17-7,in 5 wins against them this year.Phoenix has scored 4 goals in each of the last 4 wins.

The Coyotes have won 8 of their last 10 vs the Kings, including 2 straight & 3 of the last 4 matchups held in the City of Angels.

Radim Vrbata's power-play goal in the 3rd period lifted Phoenix on Saturday.Ed Jovanovski had a goal & 2 assists & Ilja Bryzgalov made 22 saves for the Coyotes, who have won 2 straight after a 4-game losing streak.

Joel Perrault & Daniel Winnik also scored in the win, which was the 99th of Wayne Gretzky's career as a head coach.

Vrbata leads Phoenix with a career-high 26 goals this season & has scored in 2 straight games.Shane Doan added a pair of assists to give him a goal & 4 helpers over his last 2 games.Doan is tops on Phoenix with 40 assists & 59 points this year.

Phoenix has 30 wins in 59 games this year, the quickest the club has hit that mark since doing so in 55 games during the 1999-2000 season.Phoenix is 1 win shy of matching their season total from last year, hence it is no surprise the club is just 2 points out of a playoff spot right now.

The Coyotes are 17-12-2 on the road this year & begin a 3-game homestand on Tuesday.

The Kings, meanwhile, begin a 3-game homestand of their own tonight & are 13-16-1 as the host this season. The club is still last in the NHL with 53 points.

Dustin Brown,Raitis Ivanans & Alexander Frolov each lit the lamp in Saturday's loss for the Kings, who had won 4 of 6 coming into the contest.

Brown has a pair of goals & 2 helpers in his last 4 games, while Frolov has posted 2 goals & 3 assists in his last 3 outings.

Dan Cloutier started in net for LA & stopped 18-of-21 shots, but was pulled after 2 periods due to flu-like symptoms.Jason LaBarbera stopped 15-of-16 attempts in the loss.

Cloutier is questionable for tonight,as is leading scorer Anze Kopitar due to flu-like symptoms.Kopitar has 55 points(25 goals,30 assists)on the season.
